Tourist Visa Cancelled Between Israel and Russia
Last Modified at:15-Dec-2008
Tourist Visa Cancelled Between Israel and Russia The two countries signed a reciprocal agreement canceling the tourist visa that was required for visits longer than 24 hours starting Saturday, 20 September 2008.

More than 150,000 Russian tourists visited Israel since the beginning of the year, more than the number of tourists throughout the previous year. This number is set to increase by at least 100,000 additional tourists following the new agreement, and the expected announcement from the Ministry of Transport on an additional designated Israeli carrier for Russian routes.

Until now only Russian tourists who visited Israel for less than 24 hours were exempt from tourist visa. The number of such one-day travelers, who enter Israel via one of its land borders with Egypt or Jordan, already reached 60,000 in 2008. The Ministry of Tourism hopes that many of them will extend their visits, thanks to the new agreement that saves them the visa costs of $120 per passenger.

At a press conference held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Pinchas Avivi, Deputy Director General of the Ministry's Division for Central Europe and Eurasia, expressed his hope that the new agreement would continue to develop and expand the complex and intimate relationship between Israel and the Russian Federation.
